So inspiring to hear Samira Ahmed speak about diversity in books. She visited us at Lewis University. Samira talked about changing the required reading in schools today. She argued that many of the novels covered in high schools have been the same for the last 50 years.
For example, To Kill a Mockingbird, Farrenheit 451, and Of Mice and Men are still mainstays for YA’s in school. Why not add books with more diverse main characters to reflect the changing majority of kids in schools.
Samira encouraged teachers to add books that mirror all different races.
